Self-Ligating Braces
Self-ligating brackets have a specialized clip that holds the archwire to the bracket without elastics. This is important for several reasons:
- Self-ligating brackets enable the wires to slide through the brackets with less friction, which means teeth can move to their new positions more easily and more comfortably.
- Self-ligating brackets allow the archwires to apply gentle and constant pressure to the teeth, which makes the treatments more comfortable. This also requires fewer adjustments, which allows for fewer and shorter appointments.
- Without elastics, it is also much easier to keep teeth clean during treatment, which helps to prevent staining.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are made of tooth-colored or clear materials and are therefore less visible than metal braces. While they are visually less prominent, keep in mind that ceramic braces are larger and more brittle than metal braces, so they require more attention to oral hygiene. It is important to be very careful not to eat foods that can damage the braces, and to be extra diligent about brushing and flossing around the brackets. For these reasons, ceramic braces tend to be used more on adults, and mostly on upper front teeth.

My 9-year-old had a wonderful experience with Rad Orthodontics! She had a palate expander and braces on her upper teeth, and the entire treatment took less than a year. On the one occasion she experienced some discomfort, the team got us in right away and quickly resolved the issue. The staff was always kind, accommodating, and fantastic with kids. We couldn't have asked for a better experience and highly recommend them!

I just got my braces off this past Monday so this review encompasses my experience from the past 18 months.For the past year and a half, I have come in about every 6 weeks and I honestly don’t think I have had any negative experiences to note. All of the staff have been nothing but friendly and professional, especially the front desk staff. The techs and orthodontists (I have been seen by both Dr. Rad and Dr. Le) are always prepared. Either their memory is impeccable or their documentation is very thorough because I always feel like I am coming in where we left off. They also have very convenient locations for anyone living in the Rockville/Bethesda area and I love that even though I started my treatment at one location, the move to another location was pretty seamless. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but once all of my retainer follow ups are complete, I think I’ll actually miss going into the office.Overall, I highly recommend this practice. The orthodontists, techs, and other staff are top tier. If you are considering this practice for your child’s orthodontic needs, I can attest that they are also good with children just by witnessing some of the interactions around me during my appointments.Finally, just wanted to note that my appointments were always pretty quick after getting my braces on but they didn’t feel rushed. I was almost always seen on time as well.

Clear Aligners (“Invisible” Braces)
Invisalign® treatment uses a series of nearly invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners to straighten your teeth. So while they're not really "braces" in the literal sense, the key benefit is that no one can tell you are wearing the aligners. They are practically invisible! Invisalign aligners are also removable, so you are not limited in what you can eat and drink during treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are less of a hassle. The aligners are comfortable and have no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment.
Metal Braces
Metal braces are one of the most common types of braces, and they are more comfortable today than ever. Made of high-grade stainless steel, they straighten teeth using brackets and archwires. Today’s metal brackets are smaller and stronger than in the past, which makes them more comfortable and easier to clean.
With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile. This is most fun for our younger patients, who like change to different colors each time they come to see us.
